    I kick everything with my right leg. But I skate, surf, and snow board goofy footed. Meaning my left leg is back. There is a better way to tell. Use your brain and see which way you are comfortable. I also find it hard to believe you have lived your entire life and never hopped on a skateboard.

    I had exact same first session at a wave pool and I am scared to go back. I wonder if there were any specific advice that you got for the pop ups that changed everything, or did you not think about that at all?

    I can see how snowboarding and regular skating (not surf skating) could negatively affect surfing as it is important to NOT have you body and shoulders facing forward when snowboarding or skating. You just want them stacked along the centre of the board, whereas with surfing you’re trying to face forward from watching your videos. (I’m a complete beginner surfer btw)

    This is basically a late takeoff in good conditions with good wave energy. The arching and shifting weight back is to put the brakes on. Yes it's efficient, very little paddling needed, but it certainly requires you to be in the perfect spot for it.

  • @BuzzLiteBeer
    @BuzzLiteBeer 5 дней назад

    Doesn't arching your back set your center of mass back on the board, leading to less speed? I've always caught more waves by putting my head down as the wave picks me up.

    If you play other sports at all, this position is very familiar. There are variations for a lot of sports Iin tennis, it’s the split stance. Skiing and snowboarding, very similar. Baseball, the hitting or fielding stance. Basketball dribbling or guarding. The key is to keep your head up, and your eyes level. That not only gives you the flexibility to move your weight around, it puts you in the best position to find your balance. Remember, your inner ear canals are what determines your balance. They are in your head, of course. So you have to get your head level, your knees driving into the wave. Bend at the knees more and you’ll drive your knees into the wave face and you’ll turn toe side down the line. Stand up and you’ll lift your weight and you can do a backside turn. (Of course you have to be on the right part of the wave too, and look where you want to go.)

    Very interesting thanks very much! I was just wondering if in addition you had any thoughts on optimal entry and exit rocker? Understand that low rocker isn't ideal, but where in the spectrum do you think is best?

    Had the same problem for years. Long time skater. Frontside cutbacks were flat and slides. Initiate the turn, lift your back arm and drop the front arm. This puts your weight on to your heels and into the rail. When you get the change in weight distribution you can put more and more power into your turns in steeper sections...! 💚☘️🇮🇪

    I e been surfing for 5 years and in reworking my fundamentals. I realized that because I jumped to a short board so early I developed a bad habit with my focus. Because I couldn’t catch many waves or catch them easily I would focus on my just that. Catching and then if I did then pop up. Well I stepped up to a larger board and have to problem catching waves. However that bad focus habit has stuck and I’m working on no longer thinking about catching and popping up since it’s no longer an issue. But it’s interesting how jumping down to a short board to early can not only impede your technique but also your focus.

    I'm guessing what you are aiming for here is a more neutral stance between turns? When I was a beginner/early intermediate bogging turns off my front foot was a huge problem, so simply getting onto the back foot was a struggle. Now I'm the kind of surfer you are describing here, heavy off the back foot and I often struggle to change my stance as I'm riding. It means I can do basic maneuvers now and link them, (rio/cutback ect) but I do feel stuck. What you are describing here is pretty counterintuitive at this point.

    You don’t need to be rich, just need to have time to do it. There are so many options for having a good time in the Mentawais, I didn’t find the time until I was 54, I’m nearly 69 and next trip will be my 20th Mentawais journey. I’m an unashamedly addicted Mentawais guy…
